MODULE 1: INTENSIVE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
(RM 1600 for 120 hours)
At the end of the Module 1 students should be able to:
- use basic grammatical structures accurately
- read and understand simple texts, guessing meaning from context
- listen for gist and speak to convey information
- write short passages effectively
This course seeks to enhance tertiary-level students’ ability to read and write effectively in the English language. In order to develop reading skills, the course incorporates a variety of exercises and activities that involve vocabulary acquisition, and active reading skills. Students’ speaking skills will be enhanced with the inclusion of speech training, speaking activities that are appropriate for a number of social contexts as well as oral presentation skills. The course also aims to draw on the connection between listening and speaking through a number of activities involving group interaction and aural-oral skill development.
Finally, students will gain exposure to the appropriate use of English grammar and vocabulary by being exposed to authentic academic and social situations such as lectures, telephone conversations, announcements, interviews, talks and discussions. Feedback will be provided throughout the 10 weeks, and there will be continuous assessment and a final class test. |
MODULE 2: ACADEMIC LANGUAGE SKILLS
(RM 2000 for 120 hours)
At the end of Module 2, students should be able to:
- read, write and listen to academic texts critically and effectively
- present ideas with confidence and credibility using effective strategies
- refine pronunciation, vocabulary usage and learning strategies through a variety of activities
- use the English Language creatively and professionally in a variety of contexts, taking into account strategies in cross-cultural communication
Course content
Module 2 will consist of four main components:
- Academic Reading Skills
- Spoken English for Professionals
- Fundamentals of Academic Writing
- Listening, Speaking and Cross-Cultural Communication
This module will consist mainly of a series of activities that provide guided opportunities for the participants to challenge and improve their individual abilities. Activities will also incorporate audio, video and computer aids to enhance the learning and teaching process. Some of the components may be synthesized for more effective learning. Interactive participation is required of the participants. Feedback will be provided throughout the 10 weeks, and there will be continuous assessment for each course. |

MODULE 3: ACADEMIC WRITING FOR POST-GRADUATE STUDENTS
(RM 800 for 56 contact hours)
Introduction
This course introduces the register of academic discourse focusing on thesis writing and the writing of academic papers. It aims to assist students in making a good impression with academic writing.
Synopsis
This course begins with an overview of some important characteristics of academic writing. It exposes the students to the different sections that are found in a thesis or an academic paper. The organization of each section and the rhetorical strategies needed are discussed. Features of grammar and lexis are also included.
Assessment
Students will be given 2 assignments for them to practice.
